Green ELCSA is pleased to share the Environmental Needs Mapping Narrative Analysis, a foundational document capturing the lived environmental realities across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA).
Thanks to all members who participated in the surveys and interviews. Your voices, experiences, and reflections have been invaluable in shaping this process.
This report emerges from a participatory process launched in January 2026, where members across parishes, dioceses, and church structures contributed their experiences, insights, and reflections on climate, environmental, and energy-related challenges.
It reflects a collective effort to listen deeply to communities and discern how the church is called to respond.
The findings reveal that environmental challenges such as water scarcity, extreme heat, energy insecurity, and pollution are already shaping the daily lives of congregations. At the same time, the report highlights a gap between this lived reality and the level of coordinated, theological, and institutional response within church structures.
Importantly, the analysis points to both urgent needs and strong opportunities. While awareness exists, there is a clear call for deeper theological engagement, leadership capacity-building, and more structured environmental action across ELCSA. The report affirms that the church holds significant potential to become a leading faith-based voice on climate justice, grounded in community realities, faith conviction, and collective action.
This document is a starting point. It will inform upcoming engagements, including workshops and the identification of Green ELCSA Champions, who will help lead and sustain environmental initiatives within their contexts.
We invite you to read the full report, reflect on its insights, and journey with us as we move from awareness to action in caring for God’s creation.
